Zero Waste Kitchen: Myths vs. Reality

Zero Waste Kitchen: Myths vs. Reality
Social media makes "Zero Waste" look like an exclusive club for people with perfect pantries and glass jars. But the reality is much more accessible.
Myth 1: You need to buy expensive gear.
Reality: You don't need beeswax wraps or fancy silicone bags to start. Using a Tupperware container you already own or a clean jam jar is zero waste. Buying new "zero waste" products is often counterproductive.
Myth 2: You can never use plastic.
Reality: Plastic is a durable material. If you already have plastic bags, use them until they break. Throwing them away to buy glass is wasteful.
Myth 3: It has to be all or nothing.
Reality: "We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly." (Anne-Marie Bonneau). If you reduce your waste by 10%, that is a success.
Practical Steps
- Refuse what you don't need (straws, flyers).
- Reduce what you do need.
- Reuse containers and bags.
- Recycle what you can't refuse, reduce, or reuse.
- Rot (Compost) the rest.
